Week 6 - Assisted Living Facility

When the World Stops, the Care Continues

The assisted living facility did not fail.
It kept operating. People kept aging. Care was still needed.
What changed was movement.

During COVID, travel stopped. Tours stopped. Families delayed decisions they would normally make in person.

Revenue didn’t lag. It was capped at the knees.
Three entities. One ALF. Years where the expansive one-level home, the staff, and the care were ready, but the world wasn’t.

The facility lost money for a time. That was stressful. For the owners. For the managers who also owned the outcome.
But the work never stopped.
Care was delivered.
Rules were followed.
The doors stayed open.
Operations tightened. Not glossy good. Necessary good.
Scheduling. Documentation. Controls. Process. The unromantic discipline that keeps people safe.

By the time we were hired last year, the worst had passed. Movement returned. Decisions resumed. The business was heading in the right direction again.

What remained was quiet damage.

The books were tangled. Ownership was unclear.
Capital accounts no longer told a single, coherent story.
Management wanted clarity. They just didn’t have a clean way to get there.

So we did what we do.

We rebuilt the financial story the numbers were supposed to be telling. Three entities, properly separated. Capital traced from contribution to use to distribution. Every investor’s capital account reconstructed from source.

No guesses.
Just what happened.

Today, the facility is profitable and steady. Not perfect. Real businesses rarely are. But better. More honest. More prepared.
Care still comes first.
Compliance still matters.
And now, the numbers reflect the business they support.
They are still our client. We’re grateful to do business with them.

A business can do the right things operationally and still struggle to move forward if the numbers aren’t clear.

This is the work we’re often brought in for after a crisis has passed.
It’s also work that helps sooner rather than later.

The next chapter gets easier when the numbers make sense.
